Hi, [adding Debian GNOME Maintainers in the loop, as it might be a bug in GNOME Software / PackageKit that affects any Debian+GNOME first boot experience, rather than something specific to how we build Debian Live systems]

FWIW on a Fedora 26 live system: 1. After logging into the GNOME session, GNOME Software / packagekitd start downloading stuff from the Internet (presumably package indices but I didn't investigate). 2. If I start GNOME Software, then I see a progress bar that says "Software catalog is being loaded" or "Software catalog is being downloaded" (depending on when exactly I start it), and eventually a list of available packages. … i.e. the right thing happens, so the good news is that it's feasible :) I don't know if they do something special to make this work in Fedora, or if the PackageKit support for APT is lagging behind, or if we do something special in our Live images that breaks this. I wonder if the first boot experience after installation is affected by the same problem. Does anyone know by heart? Otherwise, maybe syl would be happy to try? Cheers, -- intrigeri
