One argument could be that the GPL itself requires that appropriate copyright notices accompany the work. See GPLv2, Section 1, which grants you the permission to copy and distribute (verbatim) copies of the source code | provided that you conspicuously and appropriately publish on each copy | an appropriate copyright notice and disclaimer of warranty; I hope this helps.
