Tests like the dissident test and the dessert island test are sort of unofficial (or maybe semi-official) rules of thumb for deciding whether restrictions (generally but not necessarily on modification) are meaningful or not. The idea is that you imagine a particular scenario, and try to decide if the individual in the scenario can freely use the software.
