While there is no other form available to us, the uglified sources *are* the preferred form for modification. You could argue the toss about whether de-uglification results in a new preferred form, or whether it just creates a new version. But that would be pointless. Providing either the deuglified sources or a script to deuglify them is a Good Thing to do. Providing the original ugly sources is also desirable (to enable comparisons between consecutive upstream releases, unless the uglification makes such comparisons impossible). The intention of the GPL is to require people like us to do what is 'Right', and I think we all know and agree what that is in this case.
