Please CC: me on replys, i'm not subscribed to the list. I asked the author of some Freeware fonts, if he could licence them under an open source licence. This is his reply, please check the Licence below, if this classifies them open source for Debian.
I fear that "no derivative works" is a fatal kriteria, isn't it? (the adding of accents etc. is ok) Might there be an exception for artwork? (well... i would consider source code artwork, too ;) And fonts are somewhat source code for the ttf interpreter...) But 2 a) ist the only non-free Part of the Licence, isn't it? Please reply to me soon, so i can tell the author that in order to be included with Debian, he'd had to allow the creation of derived works under the same licence as his original fonts. So Debian will still be lacking good free ttf fonts (except for the few openoffice fonts). :-( Greetings, Erich Schubert (currently in New Maintainer Process) ----- Forwarded message from R Larabie ----- From: RLarabie To: "Erich Schubert" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: Free TTF Fonts for Linux ? Importance: Normal If you include the attached file with my fonts (the freeware ones only of course www.larabiefonts.com) then you're free to distribute them with Linux. It's not completely free open source though - it doesn't allow for derivative works to be created or re titling but allows for accents to be added, format conversions ... what most people are looking for anyway. One thing, Linux is still lacking very much are good, free TTF Fonts. Unfortunately, for Distributions such as Debian Linux (www.debian.org) there _is_ a requirement for them to be "free" in order to be included in the main distribution. This includes the right to distribute them freely and free of charge and to modify them. You may of course require that the Copyright Notice and original Author are kept intact; you can even require the inclusion of your "donaition.html" with the font's documentation. Maybe you would be so generous to release some (of course not your best ones ;) of your fonts under the GPL. Then your fonts could be installed by default on thousands of systems ;) A Description of the Requirements to be included in the Debian Linux "main" Distribution is available on http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines It would be fantastic if you could release some of your fonts that "free", so we could include them. Greetings, Erich Schubert ------------------ The fonts contained in this archive are Freeware. No payment is required for the use of these fonts. They're free! Commercial use? Sure, but a donation or a product sample would be appreciated. $40 US is the usual amount per font for commercial use but any amount is appreciated. I make all the fonts (around 450 of them) on my web page and they're all free. I offer Deluxe versions of some of my fonts for sale. They contain several weights and styles of each font. http://www.larabiefonts.com/deluxe.html The page is called Larabie Fonts try: http://www.larabiefonts.com or search for Larabie Fonts in a search Engine I've provided the world with about 450 free fonts, if you'd like to make a donation I'd be more than happy to accept it. No donation is too small! Music and artwork are good too. If you have some CD's you're not listening to anymore, send 'em along!
