thank you a lot for your post. 

I already yesterday tried by replacing 
the newly created xorg.conf file by 
the backups I had there. 
 
It didn't help. 

I will still try with other backups.
I have got several of them, 
because I have tried as well 

"dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" 

That didn't help at all, because 
it reconfigured only the keyboard...

dpkg will have created backups of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, called
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup<date> IIRC. Copy your current xorg.conf file
to /tmp/, and replace it with the most recent backup. Restart the X
server and see what happens.
