Thanks for the reply, Stuart. I tried getting ohci1394 out of the picture and it did clear up a lot of error messages, but didn't actually change the touchpad behaviour, which is none at all! Your bug report did get me thinking about modules and I've been piping lsmod after each suspend; it appears that the order they are loaded in gets seriously scrambled. If I can just isolate which ones actually need to be unloaded, and what order to reload them... I think what I need to understand is how and when does the kernel tell udev to create a device - back to the drawing board!
