On my notebook Dell Precision M20 I use debian sarge with package libc6-i686 and a custom kernel 2.6.17.2 from kernel.org. I compile the kernel driver ipw2200 as a module. This driver declares the names of the firmware files to look for (see <linux-2.6.17.2>/drivers/net/wireless/ipw2200.c). As far as I understand the firmware files are loaded by hotplug and the directories for the firmware are defined by /etc/hotplug/firmware.agent (FIRMWARE_DIRS). So I store the firmware files in /usr/local/lib/firmware.
