Hello, 1) Thanks Johaness for the ntfs remark, I will set it to read-only !
2) Regarding smartmontools, it was installed on laptop1 before the crash and showed nothing strange I think, here is however (below) the result of the check I did today on laptop1. On laptop2, smartctl does not work because smart is not supported without a kernel patch I did not applied (see http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/#testinghelp ) but the disk is ok I suppose because it is a new computer (ibm thinkpad r52). I installed the sata support with some difficulties in laptop2 (described in my post 28th november 2005 in this list). The problem was to have sata enabled at the same time than have a functional dvd reader in etch. Finally I found a solution: - boot in expert mode for installation - disable the ata_piix module, this will allow you to have your cd driver recognized - after some menus, debian installer will ask you again if ata_piix module must be enabled. Say yes this time. Your sata disk is now working. - finish the installation and reboot - now your cd drive is not working - change your /etc/mkinitrd/modules files (put there the ide* modules necessary for your cd drive) - run mkinitrd command to rebuild your initrd - remove the ide* modules from /etc/modules - reboot, now both cd and disk are ok. 3) Regarding the contents of syslog, I saw also nothing strange in laptop1, I searched for hda* but nothing strange. The only think I saw is that the disk in laptop1 is always around 53degreesC, which is maybe too high? In laptop2 I can not say which is the temperature because of the sata problem with smart. I will look to laptop2 syslog today. It seems that I can not post the content of syslog (even part of it) to this list due to some restriction in the size of the allowed mails? 4) Thanks !
