How to install the driver? A: Please look at the two black rectangular chips on the modem, if one of them is "HAMR5603" then it is Smart Link modem and you can download the driver from www.smlink.com To update the modem driver: a) Download the new driver and unzip it. b) Select 'add/remover programs' from control panel, and remove the old modem driver. c) Restart the system. d) When the system finds the modem (new HW, PCI card) select Advanced option and point to the location of the new driver. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: What Operation Systems are supported by the modem? A: You can use our modem under: Win98, Win98SE, WinNT, Win2000, WinMe, WinXP, and Linux All drivers are posted at www.smlink.com ** Linux related Questions/Answers are at the bottom of this document. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: Where can I buy Smart Link based modem ? A: Please send a message to : [EMAIL PROTECTED] <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ------------------------------------------------------- Q: My system does not recognize the modem or I receive "MTHAL Hardware does not support modem" message. A: The system should recognize the modem during power up. Please check the following: (1) Check if there is any unknown devices in the device manager (look for yellow exclamation marks '?'). If so, remove it. (2) Remove any 'old' modem driver. From Control panel --> add/remove programs (3) Check that the modem is enabled in the BIOS? Is there setting for 'modem on riser' 'MC97 modem' or something that relate to modem? (For CNR/AMR modems only) (4) Check for jumpers on the motherboard to enable/disable modem on riser. (For CNR/AMR modems only) (5) You have the correct mode AMR card (Primary or Secondary) for the motherboard. (For AMR modems only) (6) Reboot the system, it should find the new HW (PCI card), point to the drivers that came with the modem. We strongly recommend downloading our latest drivers from www.smlink.com and installing them. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: How do I know that the modem I have is based on Smart Link technology? A: Please look at the two black rectangular chips on the modem. If one of them is "HAMR5603" then it is Smart Link modem. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: The connect rate is low, how can I improve the performance of the modem? A: The connect rate depends on the phone line conditions. i.e. the distance of your home from the 'central office', the quality of the wires in the house... The connect rate is important but the throughput is the real quality parameter. You can connect at 48k and the throughput (time to download) will better then 49.3k connections. 1) Try to update the modem driver you can download our latest driver from www.smlink.com 2) Change the HW acceleration to 'none'. Right click on the desktop --> Properties --> Settings --> Advanced --> Performance/troubleshoot --> Hardware acceleration. Try to dial. 3) Disconnect any other devices that are using the same line answering machines, other phones...) 4) Try to dial different phone number to your ISP. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: Does the modem support Distinctive ring? A: No, the modem does not support this feature. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: What is V.92 standard? A: V.92 standard is the regular V.90 protocol with the following addition features: 1) Modem On Hold - You can receive incoming call while keeping you Internet connection. (You must have "Call waiting" feature on the phone line) 2) You can make outgoing call while keeping you Internet connection. (You must have "3-way Call" feature on the phone line) 3) Quick Connect - After the first time that you connect to your ISP the modem will "remember" the phone line conditions and the handshaking between the computer and ISP will be faster. 4) V.44 - improved data compression algorithm. 5) Faster upstream connection - In V.90 protocol the maximum upstream connection was 33K. With V.92 protocol the Maximum will be 48K. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: Can I upgrade my modem to V.92 modem? Does the modem support V.92 standard? A: V.92 drivers are posted in our download page at www.smlink.com But remember that your ISP must have v92 capabilities as well. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: Do you have any diagnostic tools? A: Yes, We have "Modem Helper" tool that can automatically check the modem, phone line and connection. It will guide you to the correct solution of the problem if exists. You can access "Modem Helper" from Control Panel --> "Modem Settings" icon. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: The modem dials to the ISP but cannot connect? A: No connection can be from many reasons. Please try the following 1) Update the driver and try to dial again. 2) Use the Modem Helper tool. (see the previous answer.) 3) Activate the Safe mode feature. Go to control panel --> modem settings --> modem helper. Check the 'safe mode 1' check box and try to dial. 4) Try to dial with 'safe mode 2' 5) Check the User name, Password, ISP's phone number... ------------------------------------------------------ Q: How to disable the modems noise? A: 1) If the "sounds" are from the PC speakers - you should disable it from control panel --> modem settings à soft speaker. You can also disable it with 'right click' on the two red lights icon that appears in the tray when the modem is dialing. 2) If the "sounds" are from the buzzer that is on the modem - You should lower the sound from My computer --> properties --> Device manager --> modems. You should first lower the sound and only then assign the modem to the dialing application. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: I have USB modem and WinXP, the modem disconnect very often ? A: In WinXP there was a bug that causes the connection problems with USB modems. Please install the fix from Microsoft at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q307271 ------------------------------------------------------- Q: How to check if Microsofts USB fix is installed on my computer? A: You can check if the system is with or without Microsofts fix by looking in: My computer --> Properties --> Hardware --> device manager --> Universal-Serial-Bus-controller --> choose one of the controllers and select properties --> Driver --> driver details. With the fix: usbuhci.sys version is 5.1.2600.14 - this is the correct one. Without the fix: usbuhci.sys version is 5.1.2600.0 - this is wrong and will cause modem to retrain, drop or disconnect. Note: If winXP is installed with SP1 the usbuhci.sys version should be: 5.1.2600.1038. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: The modem fails after reboot of the system? A: If you have MSPhone program installed under Windows 98, you MUST uninstall it BEFORE you install the modem driver. Non-conformance to this directive will cause the modem to fail after rebooting. Microsoft does not support MSPhone application anymore, as you can see on the following web page: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q193/9/06.ASP ------------------------------------------------------- Q: How can update the modem driver if I cannot connect to the Internet? Q: The updated driver on your site is more then 2Mb and I only have standard floppy drive. A: You can download the updated driver using work/Friend/ computer. If you do not have CD-WR or other device to copy the driver to your PC -you can unzip the file to a folder. The folder will contain few files. You can copy these files using few floppies to a folder on the target computer. And then follow the update driver instructions. ------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------- Linux FAQ ---------- Q: what types of modems the Linux driver supports? A: Smart Link Linux driver supports 1) HAMR56xx based AMR/CNR/MDC/ACR modem cards on the following Southbridge chips: - Intel ICH0, ICH2 - Via 686A, 686B, 8231, 8233 - SiS 961, 630 - ALI 1535. 2) SmartPCI56, SmartPCI561 based PCI modem cards. 3) SmartUSB56 based USB modem. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: Is the Linux driver Open Source? A: Unfortunately NO. Only part of system dependent files are open sourced. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: Can I use more then one Smart Link Soft Modem at once? A: Unfortunately no. We are planning to support this feature in future releases. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: How to install/un-Install the Linux driver? A: Please see the readme.txt file in the driver and the download page. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: What development environment I need to compile the driver? A: Linux kernel include files are needed. ------------------------------------------------------- Q: Is it possible to use the modem with different kernels? A: Yes. Just run 'make clean' and 'make install-amr' (or 'make install-usb') with new Linux kernel include files (without 'make uninstall'). ------------------------------------------------------- Q: After editing the Makefile: 'KERNEL_INCLUDES=/usr/include' the compilation failed. What is wrong? A: Many popular Linux distributions installs in '/usr/include' directory Linux include files adopted for application development. It may be unusable with kernel module compilation. Use native Linux kernel header files instead ('/usr/src/linux/include' directory is most popular place on such distributions). ------------------------------------------------------- Q: The modem doesn't dial. If I enter the command /ATDT"phone number"/ and press two times the enter key I get immediately the "NO CARRIER" message. There is no time to dial. A: Any input during connecting time will break the session on all modems. You should type: ATDT<number> and press 'Enter' ONLY ONE time to start the dialing and wait for modem answer ('CONNECT...' 'NO-CARRIER', 'BUSY', etc.). ------------------------------------------------------- ===================================================== ===================================================== If this e-mail doesn't answer your question, please e-mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" Thank you!
