As others have said, if APM works for you, stick with it. Unfortunately, most newer laptops seem to have no, or extremely limited, APM support. Mine will actually shut down cleanly if I'm running apmd and press the power button - that's all. otoh, it doesn't do a whole lot more with acpi :-)
