My understanding is this: Advanced Power Management (APM): older, more stable, a standard. May not work with newer machines. Uses the apmd daemon. Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI): newer, not necessarily as stable. A microsoft/toshiba/intel (etc) invention. Uses the acpid daemon. The names behind ACPI: http://www.insydesw.com/press/1997/10.07.htm My guess: stick with APM if you can get away with it.
