My understanding is this: Advanced Power Management (APM): older, more stable, a standard. May not work with newer machines. Uses the apmd daemon. Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI): newer, not necessarily as stable. A microsoft/toshiba/intel (etc) invention. Uses the acpid daemon.
