I think you need to install the package libncurses5. I did a search for the file libncurses.so.5 on the packages page (http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages) and that's what it came up with. I've had this problem before too; perhaps we should file a wishlist bug with the kernel source package to have libncurses5 be "recommended"?
