FWIW, I had the same trouble with a Vaio, same Intel chipset I think....hmm.
Work around was to d/l a couple of the testing CD's, which can be found here..pick your mirror. http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/#testing I'm sure there are better/easier ways to install a 2.4.x kernel shortly after install or even with it, but this worked for me and I now have a rescue CD. :-) Good to have when an upgrade from Win2K pro to XP pro decides to boff the MBR .. ;-) My best guess is that the 2.4.x kernels handle the shared irq's and Intel chipset more gracefully. If all else fails you could try RH7.2 which ran fine here, but I for one couldn't stand the maintenance of it. Just more familiar and comfortable with dselect. Good luck.
