I've a Toshiba
470. This is close enough to the 490 so what I did may be applicable to
your machine too.
I've upgraded my
harddrive to a 12GB (according to the box 13GB) drive. The drive came with
EZ-BIOS. The 8GB boundary is a Toshiba BIOS limitation and is not a
hardware limitation. I installed EZ-BIOS and then installed SuSE Linux on
top of this. Without EZ-BIOS, I had only *GB, but with EZ-BIOS I now have
12GB. This works. Note: All distributions do not recognize the
EZ-BIOS software.
