usually yes.  If your laptop is new enough then the pcmcia slots you are
using are actually 32bit (aka pci) slots.  If you plug a normal PC Card
into the pcmcia slot only 16bit's of that 32bit bus is used.  Cardbus
cards look identical apart from the gold strip they have on the top side
of the card near the connector.

Cardbus cards are more expensive however they usually release some of the
CPU (as data can be moved faster) and you can get good cardbus cards that
actually send at 100Mb/s.
