I don't have a console on the serial port. The problem is that when the modem is not plugged in inittab doesn't contain the "S" line; it gets dynamically inserted when the modem is plugged in. I can uncommend the "S" line, then telinit q and the problem goes away, but whenever I take out the modem then plug it in again the "S" line is back in inittab. Strange, isn't it?
