You're looking for the keymaps files. They should have short extensions related to which country they are for... There's two different styles of setting up keyboard stuff under X, xkb and xmodmap. > Will these special keys work at all? You can use showkeys with different commandline options to see what keycodes and scancodes they produce. I suspect there may be more than one German keyboard.
