Toshiba is the only experience I have but I would not buy it again.

I'll second the Thinkpad recommendation. If you're worried about dropping it, Thinkpads are apparently about the most bullet-proof laptops you can get. I used mine (T23) to watch The Simpsons on DVD on a trans-Atlantic flight, but that depends on having an outlet at your seat. Oh, and get the airplane power adaptor when you get the laptop -- it'll be much easier than trying to figure out which adaptor to get later. If you just want to work on your laptop when flying, then many Thinkpads also have the Ultrabay port, and one of the options for that is an extra battery. That means your CD/DVD drive isn't plugged in, but then on battery you wouldn't want to use a power-hog like that anyway.
