Runlevels are distro dependants. Debian default is 2. Red Hat, for example is 2->text login, 3->[x|g|?]dm graphic login. Try to boot in single user (at prompt, type "linux single" or "whatever single" depending your kernel name). Then remove in /etc/rc2.d the link to ?dm ... You can use rm, or better is update-rc.d ... But rm works good because it's only a symlink. Then you can "init 2" to go into your runlevel. For your kbd/mouse problem, post your xfree log, and your XF86Config (or XF86Config-4) file.
