I think this is because the console now depends on the framebuffer provided by the video driver. In theory the video driver could switch back to a text mode on exit and the console driver could then be swapped to vgacon (or whatever is appropriate) but there is no mechanism for this currently. > This is different from my experience with intel KMS and quite annoying.
