Thanks for that pointer. It doesn't seem to be the fix for my problem
because

        # cat /sys/module/block/parameters/events_dfl_poll_msecs 2000

but it set me on the path to fixing it, that is assuming I still
experience it after my updating to KDE 4.12.3 yesterday.
