Guess why udev replaces hotplug by now: hotplug kinda _was_ broken because it had e.g. some race conditions when using custom scripts (that's also why usb devices properly appear in /dev again with 2.6.15). Why udev itself is sometimes wanted is another story (fixed device names is one, especially when using event devices in the input system). HS
