If you don't want/have the time/have the opportunity to recompil mplayer, and you experience lag problems using mplayer under kde (which are not there with -nosound, and were not there with -ao arts), try using autosync 30. It works perfectly for me, after hours trying to understand why there was lags. I hope it will help somebody.
