You don't mention what mplayer you have, but in any case, I think you need an updated mplayer. IIRC, it was only recently that the mplayer got arts support. I belive that you will need to compile it yourself, or find a better mirror than I have: deb http://marillat.free.fr/ unstable main That line doesn't have a .deb with arts support built in as far as I can tell (Just downloaded the 0.90-i686 player, and no arts in the "-ao help" output).
