Hi,

A short reminder, since there is now a date: scala and scala-asm will be
removed from testing on 2026-11-01, and with them pilon, json4s, scopt
and htsjdk with its users (picard-tools, fastqc, snpeff, artemis and
others), see https://udd.debian.org/cgi-bin/autoremovals.cgi. htsjdk can
leave that list on its own: 5.0.0+dfsg-2 drops the scala-library build
dependency and can be uploaded now that gradle 4.6-3 is in unstable
(https://salsa.debian.org/med-team/htsjdk/-/merge_requests/1).

The cause is https://bugs.debian.org/1142168. scala-asm 9.9.0 is a
migration candidate and passes every policy, but britney skips it with
"scala-faux-build-depends": it Breaks scala (<< 2.12), so the build
dependencies of scala 2.11 become uninstallable in testing. Uploading
scala 2.12 is the only clean fix. The package has no new binaries, so it
does not go through NEW.

It is ready for review in
https://salsa.debian.org/java-team/scala/-/merge_requests/2 (self-hosting
build without sbt, two builds byte-identical, autopkgtest, and ratt on the
14 reverse build dependencies). The reverse dependencies are ready too:
the latexdraw MR is approved by its uploader
(https://salsa.debian.org/java-team/latexdraw/-/merge_requests/3), and the
plm and pilon MRs wait only for scala. The whole chain (2.12, 2.13, 3)
was rebuilt in upload order from a clean sid; the order and how to build
each package are in
https://salsa.debian.org/mendezr/scala/-/wikis/Upload-order

Scala 2.12 is also the first step of a longer plan. I am writing dh-scala
(https://salsa.debian.org/mendezr/dh-scala), a debhelper build system for
Scala libraries without sbt, plus a generator that starts a package from its
Maven Central POM. It already builds scala-xml-2.12 and
scala-parser-combinators-2.12 with classes byte-identical to their
hand-written builds, and libraries for Scala 2.13 and 3 too. Nothing to
review there yet: scala 2.12 comes first.

Thanks,
Juan
