There is a solution for your problem, 1. Forget ifconfig, and route 2. Get knowlege about ip and tc (iproute package) 3. Compile QoS into kernel. 4. Check Linux-advanced iprouting-howto http://www.linuxdocs.org/HOWTOs/Adv-Routing-HOWTO.html
