I have improved Rxvt in upstream level so that it can automatically
set encoding and font according to the current LC_CTYPE locale.
In other words, for example, if you have LANG=ja_JP.eucJP (or
LANG=po_PO), Rxvt checks it and goes into EUC-JP (or ISO-8859-2)
mode. Supported encodings (i.e., encodings which Rxvt has default
font definition) are: ISO-8859-n (n=1..15), KOI8-R, KOI8-U, EUC-JP,
Shift_JIS, EUC-KR, EUC-CN (aka GB), and Big5.

# I am also interested in recent Thai support by aterm-ml package.

Note that my improvement is integrated into the CVS version of
Rxvt. Please consult http://www.rxvt.org/ and
http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=221 for detail.

I tried to write the default font definitions so that it is
conveniently used not only in Debian but also in other OSes.
However, I don't know about other OSes. I also don't know which
font is popular in China, Taiwan, Korea, Russia, Ukraine, and other
countries/regions.

I'd like the default font definitions to be checked by native
speakers. I'd like this message to be forwarded into mailing
lists where native Chinese/Korean/Russian/Ukrainian/etc speakers
who may be interested are subscribing.

PS. Is it appropriate to want Debian Sid (and hopefully
Debian Woody) to have CVS version of Rxvt instead of the
current 2.6.x series of Rxvt? It improves i18n very much,
though I don't know CVS Rxvt is stable enough for Debian
Woody as a released version in near future.
