I am positively surprised that so many people in Debian still use mutt (it's by far the most efficient way to handle large amounts of e-mail including mailing lists"), so we need to cater for the fact that e-mails are written in an entirely different software (an "editor"¹) than it is consumed in. Greetings Marc ¹ to make it harder, the combination between mail reader and editor multiplies.
