I agree in general, but when one limits the search to say "sid", it
shows no kernel for i686 (for example):

Aha, thanks! That was not easy to guess. After adding experimental to
sources.list

Surprise, as this page

states that version 3.18.6-1~exp1 should be in that snapshot. Finally
I have downloaded .deb and installed from local file :)

I would be happy to. However it does not allow me to use the latest
kernel from 3.x branch (3.16 is now 1 year old).
