Drupal does not really provide an automated upgrade path between releases (and there are *deep* changes that can lead to hair loss when upgrading; just look at a recent photo of myself to fully comprehend the problematic), but several versions can be concurrently installed. They should be regarded as independent pieces of software. Jessie shipped with both drupal6 and drupal7.
