AFAIK you don't actually need the bit-identical .orig.tar.gz to build the > -1 uploads of a package. You only need a tarball that contains the identical files as the .orig.tar.gz. Which can be generated from a tag or branch with the same contents. Perhaps dgit should arrange for that to be checked in automatically the same way it checks in the debinized source tree? (Having such a ref in git would be more or less a prerequisite for using pristine-tar in an efficient manner anyway.) -- see shy jo
