I'd never advocate dropping kernels or archs. Our social contract binds us to provider our *users* the best possible OS. If systemd makes Debian GNU/Linux better (and here I am supposing the vast majority of Debian users are Linux users) then the right thing to do is to use it. What about other kernels? What about embedded systems? That depends on the developers involved. Probably using a different init or porting systemd is a fine solution, depending on the amount of work required. FreeBSD, HURD and Linux have different targets, a different user base and a different developer base. Trying to create a completely uniform Debian out of them is, IMO; doomed to fail. We don't want three sub-optimal, perfectly identical operating systems. We want the three best operating systems (maybe a little bit different in functionality) we can give to our users.
