Exactly. It also provides a place for people currently abusing the /dev tmpfs, and using /etc as a writable location for cache files (LVM2). % ls -1d /dev/.* /dev/.initramfs /dev/.initramfs-tools /dev/.mdadm /dev/.udev Once present, it should be easy to provide compatibility symlinks for /lib/init/rw, /var/run and /var/lock.
