Some years ago I've used -j sometimes to speed up building on Solaris (using gmake and gcc) on multiprocessor machines, very often with the result that the build went trough fine, but the resulting binary was broken. Since that time I've avoided to use -j, except to test things. But probably those problems were fixed in the meantime....
