So far I can only partially reproduce the problems you reported: I
noticed a high CPU usage, but the system stays responsive even on my old
P3 550MHz; and simply disabling the plugin works for me.
I'll look further into this, and hopefully I can get the upstream
developer to take a look at this as well.

For the record, there are long standing plans for upstream to take over
maintenance of this package by himself, but those seem to be stalled for
some time and are in dire need for clarification.
