Because I just noticed the FTBFS and did not dig deeper until now.

  * Stop providing static libraries for: libblkid, libfdisk, libmount,
    libsmartcols. Also see #963933.

It started with libmount no longer being statically linkable ... I'm not
sure if the other libs had similar problems or the axe was just chopping
off all the static "cruft", causing collateral damage. This change
should have been verified at least by test-rebuilding all reverse
build-depends of the libraries in question.

Which sounds like a very good point for a static binary.
