I think this is actually a gcc 6 regression (from gcc 5). The LO16 errors also appear in the successful 2.77.a+dfsg0-7 log in a different format, but do not cause ld to exit with a failing exit code (this might be a separate bug in binutils). The errors only started appearing in the blender build logs after gcc6 was made the default. Disabling gold on mips by removing the "-fuse-ld=gold" option fixes the build and can be used as a workaround, but it still produces some LO16 errors and I'm not sure if it actually produces a working blender executable.
