not only are the byte-compiled files removed, but the entire directories are
removed. i'm using stock mercurial, no homebrew anything or plugins (if it
does plugins).

While I don't believe this was caused by a packaging bug, the snippet to remove old cruft from site-packages has been there since before squeeze, so it should be safe to drop it now.
