To me it makes perfect sense - 'show desktop' shows desktop to give access to 
it momentarily but restores everything as soon as desktop is no longer needed.
It does not minimise any windows - if it did, there would be a some sort of 
conflict when you start new application but all opened windows remain 
minimised... If you have many windows open it will be quite annoying to 
restore each of them.

I think you are looking for function to minimise all windows, but that would 
be slightly different action. 
Here's what I do: I just press Ctrl+F2 to switch to second desktop and then 
Ctrl+F1 when I need to return.

I'm quite surprised I see no widget to minimise all, but as for 'show desktop' 
it seems to be intentional. Hopefully there is a keyboard shortcut (or option 
to set one)...
