This can now be solved by using the "Globals true" config option when
loading the plugin (use a<LoadPlugin perl> block rather than a single
statement). See the collectd.conf(5) manpage for details.
I replaced the "LoadPlugin perl" statement with:
<LoadPlugin perl>
Globals true
</LoadPlugin>
and removed the LD_PRELOAD env. variable setting from
/e/init.d/collectd that I'd put in. It worked just fine.
However, I couldn't find any mention of LoadPlugin blocks or the Globals
option in the man page(s). Hmmmmm.... I assume they'll eventually make
it there. Thanks for all the work done on the collectd package. I use it
quite a bit.
