I would maybe not split everything, but only those packages
which involve a huge dependency list, such as Qt (or GTK+).
E.g. the libmltxml module only depends on libXML2. I wouldn't
split it, because libXML2 not too big and nearly everything
in Debian depends on it anyway.
Most people I know with a KDE/GNOME desktop also have got some
applications depending on the over evil side, installed.
I am using e.g. iceweasel on KDE (most users do so) and e.g. many gnome
users want k3b..
Splitting the package again would be too bloated in my opinion in this case.
