Is your $HOME on NFS?

Do you have environmental variables set?

Can you run
        echo "\bye" >bla.tex
        tex -kpathsea-debug=-1 bla.tex >bla.debug 2>&1
and send us the output of bla.debug (compressed!)

We had similar cases where all of the hard disk was searched or all
of $HOME which was on NFS.

Best wishes
