The default apt setting is to treat recommends as hard dependency,
so there shouln't be a suprise for the inexeperienced user. Or the other 
way round: If a user changes this setting, he shouldn't be suprised too 
much about a missing recommended package.

I think because of it's smaller size, freepats is the suitable default.

Making a or-ed dependency could be the solution. By this, at least one 
soundfont package is automatically installed, but one doesn't have to 
install freepats when fluid-soundfont is already installed.
