The problem appears when updating the end of the bar. For instance,
using two-line bars, percentages are fine on the first line but wrong on
the second one. Alternating the message display (show, erase, show,
erase...) also works right. The glitches never show up on xterm or
console.

Ways to get a long "Reading package list" stage are to remove apt binary
caches (pkgcache.bin) or use a different LANG from last root invocation.

The code in aptitude is simple, straightforward. All points to a
terminal bug. I should note that "$TERM should be set to gnome" is only
a title, not a solution. Terminals that claim to be xterm compatible
should be fully compatible (read the gnome report for more information).

If you still believe this is an aptitude bug, please name another Curses
application with a similar behaviour (updating text on the bottom right)
that works.
