If you really want to work on system sounds, I welcome you to work on GNOME 2.24 in experimental, for which there is a whole new framework to play system sounds, that integrates with all GTK+ applications. If you’re interested, you should package a freedesktop-compatible sound theme (if you find one that doesn’t suck), and check that enabling system sounds in the control center does work, with and without pulseaudio.
