Thanks! I didn't realize the Debian package was so far behind. Indeed, whatever the problem was, it doesn't happen with 5.07. Although xscreensaver now gives the following warning:
xscreensaver: 22:46:09: WARNING: RANDR and Xinerama report different xscreensaver: 22:46:09: screen layouts! Believing RANDR. (I'm not sure what that could mean, given that I only have one monitor and it occurs even if I haven't ever changed the resolution.)
