You did well; the error is the same which means the map structure became
inconsistent before this function call.
I spotted a problem with floppy drive handling; please could you check if
removing or commenting out this line:
(fd0) /dev/fd0
from device.map silences the error message?

Yes, removing the line
(fd0) /dev/fd0
from /boot/grub/device.map silences the error messages
error: cannot open `(null)' while attempting to get disk size
