Well, I just realized I have the problem on my work system:
$ info -w octave
*manpages*
but
$ info -f /usr/share/info/octave.info.gz
works as expected, so the file is there.
If anyone has a pointer at hand as to when "info" uses the manpages, I
would appreciate that.
