ok, I was right in my original report that the crash happens when the system time is moved backwards. somehow I got onto the idea that moving the time forward was the trigger, and explains why I had trouble consistently reproducing it for a while.
this will crash the X server every time on my machine:
date 03201820;sleep 60;date 03201800
